Candy Crush, like Bejeweled and many other puzzle games can consume the duration of days, hours, or weeks. It's not just about converting numbers into simple numbers. Each session 2048 game, is a scrappy struggle to fill space. It's an experience of Zen meditation when you click solo and an all out war when you click together. 2048 playing against other playersWhat's the reason we can't stop? Judy Willis, a neurologist and adjunct faculty member at the Graduate School of Education at University of California, Santa Barbara, explains the neuroscience behind the 2048 addiction we are currently experiencing. It's all about Dopamine As far as neurotransmitters go, dopamine is one of the most well-known. It ferries information throughout your nervous system every day. As it gets bigger, the brain goes into hyperdrive. "Dopamine is among the most powerful neurochemicals - and the most addictive drugs that we know of," Willis says. Dopamine enhances happiness, endurance and eases stress. Dopamine can be increased by winning a bet, achieving success at work or using cocaine. This dopamine-driven combination of happiness and endurance is what makes athletes play more, it's also what pulls drug users into addiction. The same is true for 2048. Willis says 2048 is one of the most potent dopamine boosters. 1. Willis: The power of prediction. Willis states that "The brain is adamant about making predictions." "In 2048 every 2 or 4 you make is the equivalent of a prediction. It's hard to tell if it's the right thing to do however, the game offers you endless opportunities to make another prediction. Willis mentions James Paul Gee's research showing that show predictors still generate dopamine at the rate of 80 percent failure. That means, even when your 2048 scoreboard has been damaged eight times out of 10, your brain will want you to continue playing. Dopamine's effects guarantee that even when you fail to get to 2048 the goal, you'll be at peace. Willis says that instead of feeling stressed the brain is so calm that it doesn't want to stop. 2. An obstacle that is attainable: Dopamine levels can stagnate if a game is too hard or easy. Willis states that a challenging video game must be attainable however not impossible to obtain the best boost. She says that "Achievable challenges" are the main words. This will give you the greatest dopamine boost. Anyone who has reached 2048 (by luck) know that this coveted target can be both challenging and achievable. This means we have to keep working and sleeping until we can win another time. Willis declares, "It's so satisfying to be able to overcome a problem that people keep playing," Your Daily (or Hourly!) 2048 Fix The addiction to video games is real. But, there are many differences between an addict and a diehard. Willis states that those who become dependent on video games experience their feelings so intense that they are unable to take on other tasks in their lives. It's not gotten to that level in our situation. Yet. Office productivity has decreased by 20 percent from 2048. Willis states that it's normal. "The frequent rush of dopamine when you combine 16s into 32 leads to the desire to stay away from working," she says. "Because you don't know what's in store for the future, you may be better the next time."
